Hitomi (ASTRO-H) Data Released

The observation data of Hitomi (ASTRO-H), Japan’s sixth X-ray astronomy mission launched in February 2016 (and tragically terminated in a few months), was released. The observation list is here. Hitomi’s life was short, but its precious data products will last forever. One of Hitomi’s legacy is observation of the hot gas in the Perseus cluster with the highest energy resolution. Superior energy resolution of the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) allowed us to measure velocities of the hot gas with an accuracy of 20 times better than before. This is the first direct measurement of velocities of the hot gas in the center of a galaxy cluster (Nature , 535, 117, 2016新しいウィンドウで開きます).
